Overseeing the entire management team and directing all activities and functions is Chehaw’s Executive Director, Doug Porter. Prior to coming to Chehaw, he was the director of The Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and of Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida. He is also the former Deputy Director of the Toledo Zoo. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology from The University of South Florida and a Master’s in Adult Education from The University of Georgia. |

Kevin Hils,
Zoo Director

Kevin works with everyone imaginable as zoo director, from the Chehaw staff to guests visiting the park. His job allows him to oversee both his passions, the care of the animal collection and educating the public on conservation and preservation. He received his education from Miami University with a Bachelors in Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Zoological Education, and attended George Mason University’s AZA Professional Zoo Management School. Also, his prior employments at the Knoxville Zoological Gardens and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have prepared him for his position as Zoo Director for Chehaw. |

Ben Kirkland,
Natural Resources Manager
“Chehaw is a gem in Southwest Georgia, and it is my honor to manage this natural resource and educate the public of the wonders of the outdoors.”
Taking care of the grounds at Chehaw is a big job. With over 700 acres of land to maintain, Ben Kirkland, Chehaw’s Natural Resources Manager, has a lot of ground to cover…literally. He manages the native wildlife, fish ponds and all forestry along with overseeing maintenance of the campgrounds, picnic grounds, play park, train route and picnic shelters. Kirkland has been employed at Chehaw for the past 23 years, and he has a degree is Wildlife Technology and Forestry Technology along with a plethora of certifications including prescribed burn manager, pesticide applicator, and hunting safety instructor.

Tonya Hart,
Marketing & Development Director

Overseeing the park’s marketing efforts and the guest services department is Tonya Hart. She is our friendly face who makes sure your visit to Chehaw exceeds your expectations. Tonya also manages the membership, sponsorship and funding for the park. She attended Darton College and graduated with a degree in nursing. She has over 20 years of experience in the senior housing industry, serving as Corporate Director of Marketing and Regional Operations Specialist at facilities spanning the Southeast.

Don Meeks,
Maintenance Manager
As a general contractor from Bozeman, Montana since 1992, Don Meeks brings superior talent and leadership skills to Chehaw. He is responsible for the beautiful Birds of Prey arena designed by the famous Jim Fowler, as well as, the Meerkat exhibit which has quickly become one of the Zoo’s main attractions. A graduate of University of Nevada, Don was hired as the maintenance manager in October 2009 to oversee daily Park operations and development projects throughout Chehaw. |
